What is a System Administrator?

In computing world, the title of systems administrator refers to the person who is responsible for the servers of an organization (company, organization, administration). He works with the CIO (Chief Information Systems), the DBA (Database Administrator, DBA data), network administrators and the webmasters and related developers, workstations and finally users. He is responsible for the availability of information within the company.

The expertise in systems administration includes knowledge of information systems and how people use them in an organization. This includes both some knowledge of operating systems and application software, and troubleshooting hardware and software. However, the most important skill to a system administrator is problem solving. Is often called an administrator when an information system is not working or wrong, it must be able to make an accurate and rapid diagnosis of the malfunction and then apply the best logical methods to fix it. System administrators are not software architects or developers.

However, they must understand the behavior of software to deploy and resolve various issues affecting them. Knowledge of various programming languages and scripting automation routines (Bash and Perl or Python) is their often necessary. In the case of systems connected to Internet or highly critical business systems, an administrator must be proficient in computer security. This includes not only the deployment of patches, but also prevents breakdowns and other security issues.
